Shangri-la

Shangri-la Just a short blog this, Shangri-la is geographically and politically Tibetan, only the Chinese government don't seem to think so. The population is 99% Tibetan and the town has a really different feel to the other places we have visited so far in China. At 10,300 ft above sea level its also the highest.

The Town is split in two, the old town and the new concrete block town. The old town really does have charm and there are small alleyways in which you can lose yourself, There is nowhere near the volume of tourists here so its much more like we expected.
In the centre of the old town, the local folk congregate each evening for an hour or more of dancing, it's really nice to see and it's not done for the tourists either, they simply do that everyday and really enjoy themselves.
Behind the dancing square is an impressive Temple and the largest prayer wheel in China, the Lama temple hardly gets a mention in the guide books which was a bit of a surprise as we thought it was really good and at night it's lit up.
We really enjoyed the old town and used it as a base to explore further into the Hunan area.

The locals doing their thing !
They keep this up for well over an hour !!
And most seem to know what they are doing !!
